Don't Ask, Don't Tell in Hair Weave Culture

This week, a landmark decision has been made in Congress to overturn the controversial "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in the military. But for women, the long-existing unspoken rule of not asking and not telling lives strong in the weave, wig and hair extension communities.

Don't act like you don't know what this is ladies!
But for those who don't know, this is an unattached weave.
Everyone from Paris Hilton to Jessica Simpson, who has come clean and admitted her own weave wearing habits, has worn a fake hair piece at some point in their career.
Looks good, doesn't it?
Simpson has been a pioneer in abandoning the unspoken, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in weave culture by coming out with her own line of hair extensions made from real human hair.

Attitudinal Real Housewife of Atlanta, Sheree Whitfield, also admits to rockin' a weave. Meanwhile, her co-star Kim Zolciak is a full on wig wearer, which is a less natural look.

Her look says:
Don't mess with my weave, bee-yatches!
But some mega-celebrities, with thick and luscious locks, have not been so quick to come clean about their alleged weaves:
Is it her hair or is it a weave?
The Queen of Talk has denied rumors that she is wearing a weave, but those in the blogosphere have been skeptical. Whatever the truth is, we still love you Mama Oprah... real or fake... tracks or no tracks. (BTW, for those who don't know (or pretend not to know) what a "track" is, then click here for a multimedia presentation).

But getting back on track, the business of hair weaving is a multi-million dollar industry. Comedian Chris Rock explains in his hair documentary, Good Hair.

OK, so it is clear that African-American women are deep into the weave culture... but what about my blonde sisters? Well, according to the New York Times, the demand for blond weaves is so high, that it is actually becoming a way that poor Russian women can pull themselves out of poverty -- they cut off their healthy blonde locks and then sell them to wealthy Americans in search of gold-toned extensions.

No Joke! This is a Russian hair-weaving factory:
For more about this phenomenon, read:
For Russia’s Poor, Blond Hair Is Snippet of Gold

But if this is a multi-million dollar industry... maybe even billion dollar industry... then why do women feel the need to not ask and not tell

It could be sheer embarrassment at the fact that one cannot grow her own thick and long, and what is perceived as beautiful hair. It could also have nothing to do with shame and more to do with simply wanting to add thickness to thin hair, length to short hair, or color to uncolor-treated hair.

For others, wearing a weave is just a style thing. Maybe you want a quick change without the commitment of a hair cut or time it takes to grow your hair naturally.

Whatever the reason, I am calling for a revolution in the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in weave culture. As an occassional weave wearer myself...

Yes, my friends. It is a weave!
I'm coming out of the closet!
I have found that wearing fake hair gives my real hair a break from all of the heat I normally use in styling tools like curling irons and flat irons, which ultimately damage my hair.

My real hair is healthy. My real hair is long. But sometimes my real hair needs a break. That's all.

If you would like to come out of the hair weaving closet and profess the benefits of your own "piece" or "track," then please leave your comments below. (I'm sure they will be appreciated by some girl, somewhere, who is in desperate need of a hair weave).

xoxo,

THREADING VS. WAXING AND CELEBRITY DOPPELGANGER--AMBER AFFELDT

TO THREAD OR TO WAX TIS' THE QUESTION?
The answer is easy. TO THREAD.

The benefit of threading that most sets it apart from other hair removal techniques is its precision. While waxing and plucking can often leave unwanted stray hairs around your eyebrows, a threading artist goes through your hair row by row, giving eyebrows a clean and defined shape. Threading only removes hair, not skin, and because it is so exact, it can remove hairs that are finer than those that can be removed by waxing or plucking.

Threading is an ancient method of hair removal practiced by the people of South Asia and Arabia. It is a delicate procedure and  involves hair removal with the means of highly skilled hands using special thread to pluck and pull hair out from the roots.

Trust me the video makes this even look more painful then it really is. If you can handle waxing or tweezing then you can handle threading. And don't get it twisted, neither waxing nor threading is painless, but threading lasts way longer  than waxing.

Benefits of Threading
  • One of the greatest benefits of threading is that it is less messier and faster as compared to waxing or tweezing for hair removal purposes. Especially hair on the upper lip and eyebrows. (You can thread anywhere you have hair including your chin.)
  • Threading is cheaper than waxing and much cleaner! Wax is used over and over and sometimes the same stick is even used to remove the hair. Sanitation is a huge issue with waxing. With threading only one piece of thread is used per person. They have a whole spool of thread so they would never have a reason to use the same piece of thread over.
  • Waxing causes redness and irritation. With threading no matter how sensitive your skin is you will never get that extreme redness, soreness and  yes sometimes scarring caused by pulling out the follicle of your eyebrow hairs. If the temperature of the wax is not exactly right than that too can cause severe irritation.  In threading the top layers of skin are not peeled or traumatized in the process.
  • Threading allows the beautician to develop the natural arc of your eyebrow as they have closer access to each hair growth since it is done individually.
Threading is a great method of hair removal for both women and men. If it is done regularly it helps to weaken the hair follicle the hair growth becomes less prominent and becomes less dense over time. So of you have one of these going on...

then do yourself a favor and thread it off! Uni-brows are NEVER acceptable.

There are multiple locations in the DC area. I visited Perfect Eyebrows at the  Georgetown Mall. But click here for a directory of threading locations in the DC metro area.  It cost me only 10 bucks+ 20%tip. Now that's a deal to get the perfect shape for your eyebrows for at least two weeks!

Ok so here I am before I get threaded.

And voila! After the magic.

OK and now it's time for my favorite weekly segment.

CELEBRITY DOPPELGANGER

Each week we will be picking a DCOH fan to be the Doppelganger of the week. The chosen fan  will be featured on the blog of course  and also  on our weekly entertainment segment with Mojo on TBDTV. And this week we chose the oh- so- lovely DCOH fan Amber Affeldt.

Amber's #1 look alike is the envy of every man, woman, and animal on the planet. She is only the most popular and desired femme fatal on the planet. Humanitarian, goodwill ambassador, academy award winning actress, alleged hubby stealer, and the woman who is most known for those lustrous lips--It's none other than the one and only --Angelina Jolie.

Coming in strong at #2 with a strong showing at 96% is actress Elisha Cuthbert  most known for her prominent role as Kim Bauer in the  action-thriller television series 24. And my fave celeb look-alike that Amber has a  nice resemblance to is one of the  Gilmore Girls--Lauren Graham!  OK I'm going to go on record to say that Amber probably has one of the most desired Celeb Doppelganger's out there.

Want to be our next Doppelganger? Become a fan on Facebook and send us a message. Tell us who t people tell you what celebrity you look like.

That's all from  DC ON HEELS "Giving you the local hookup to food, fashion and fun in the DC metro area."
